I use the #Pidgin plug-in #Twitgin which shows my timeline in a tabbed window, and lets me send messages. But !GNUsocial does !XMPP too, so any Jabber client can connect to a GNUsocial instance that has XMPP turned on. Also, see http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/Statusnet_clients

I just discovered the !gnusocial check-in plugin by @chimo. I looked for something like this already for a long time. Awesome! Sadly it fails on my system with this JS error "SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data chiq.js:183:60" Any idea what's wrong here?

Yes, the best help !gnusocial can get right now is to show the diversity of applications it can have. Proof of concept projects etc. And the smaller the step to try out a new idea the better.
For my part I will put together some command-line tools for discovery, interaction etc. Some sort of collection of "federation debugger" software.
