It is nice to sit and listen to an episode of “Quirks and Quarks”. This marvelous science program on CBC Radio was first brought to my attention by colleagues at McGill and UBC when I was a graduate student. I have been a fairly regular listener ever since. I especially like how cross-cutting (eclectic) are the topics that come together to make a single episode. In th…

Installed a new rechargeable battery and brushes in our oldest Roomba, a 531 model nicknamed “R2”. I have always enjoyed the modularity of many of these iRobot designs, which encourages replacements and even upgrades.Once it’s charged, I am excited to see how well the little fellow behaves. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/87f2c1f7afb26f00c498a2145c48995fea1f184ab2fa9d660f1a8959e7a32751/view

I have been very interested in this paper lately, as it bears on the question of how many neutrons we would see in HALO when supernova neutrinos strike the experiment https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.11295I am keen on understanding the prediction uncertainty in lieu of the measured uncertainty of the neutrino-lead cross section.

Why I’m not worried about my students using ChatGPT http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24136 I agree with a great deal in this. I too had, years before ChatGPT, the â€why put 99% of your effort into stopping the 1% who might cheat†realization. Pour your effort into your teaching and mentoring. Cheters will fail by their own hand, now, soon, or later. They plant the s…

Indeed! Same for classes with writing or other skills ... ChatGPT offers a chance to do what amounts to the best kind of learning anyway: do it live, do it in class, do it together and share and discuss and struggle. Passive learning can happen outside of class.

Had some fun today tracking down the code issues in HALO data processing. These caused processing to fail on about 1% of all HALO data. Each nominal HALO data-taking run lasts 24 hours. Running for 10 years almost continuously, HALO has over 6000 runs. (Not all runs are nominal! 😉)But you can't argue with the up-time ... typically better than 98-99% annually! The goal i…

I'm seeing lots of writing about how the tech layoffs demonstrate that "tech leaders hate labor". And I can't disagree with that. But at a basic level, tech leaders have always been incentivized to do one thing: create narratives that influence investors and other market forcers to assign greater value to the company. It's rarely about numbers; it's about a story that attr…

The saga of the Chevy Volt in cold climate conditions continues!Today's adventure: the window on the passenger-side front door got stuck in the down position. This seems to be a result of the utter failure of the window regulator.Parts have to come from US. Mechanic hacked the door to keep the window up by clever use of vice grips in the panel (tape in cold weather leaves…

A look back at the last week of weather, from the perspective of my weather station. What a week! We saw air temperatures down to -34C preceded by wind speeds up to 43 km/h. At one point, wind chills got to around -40C which … fun fact … is also equal to -40F. So I also got to see the equivalence point of the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales! Quite a week! https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/05bcfb4ed1526de80162396037434874bdd9f13e1c450680da33514fab05024e/view
