A reminder that the first # FediBookFair is this weekend. I will likely blast out little bits of backstory on the # writing of my first two non-fiction books, and I am happy to take (and try to discuss) questions on # physics , # particlephysics , and # astrophysics during the weekend! https:// http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24777 ve/111326732129359842 Find my books on…

From http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24664 on Mastodon: Here is the one of the first images from Lucy's encounter with asteroid Dinkinesh. Not only is it a beautiful image of this small world never seen before but it reveals that tiny Dinkinesh has a companion moon! The image was taken at 12:55 p.m. EDT (1655 UTC) Nov. 1, 2023, within a minute of closest approach, from …

From http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24632 on Mastodon: In 1987, the closest supernova in modern times flashed in our skies. Even though it was in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 168,000 light-years from Earth, astronomers detected the light and neutrinos from the supernova 1987A. It would be decades before the first gravitational wave observatory would come online. Astrono…

Second evening of curling lessons went better than the first evening, but I have a lot to learn. Coordination is my big problem, and this will come with a lot more practice. I just need that additional practice!

From http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24632 on Mastodon: As far as we know, black holes can only be formed by the death of massive stars, but a persistent theory says that black holes of all masses could have formed directly in the early Universe. These primordial black holes would help explain several mysteries in astronomy: outlier mergers of black holes, dark matter, …

Let’s end # DarkMatterDay with a video of a single bubble nucleating in a # PICO40L dark matter bubble chamber. This is precisely the kind of behaviour that would result from # DarkMatter interacting with a detector like this. You expect a single, low-energy interaction nucleating a lone, isolated bubble. This is why it’s so critical to construct these with low radioi…

Happy # DarkMatterDay ! I will share some fare today relevant to this day. Enjoy the mystery of the unidentified matter that has shaped the # cosmos . Maybe you will even want to become engaged in solving the # mystery . There are no easy answers on the constituents of dark matter. Easy stuff was done long ago. :-) https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/11abb096c3e02dbe038a450f3c9fa9d994ba911c83c0a8f685b275a4bd5d3f17/view

From coreyspowell@mastodon.social on Mastodon: For a dose of perspective: Even at the peak speed of the Parker Solar Probe (~180 km/sec), it would take more than 7,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system. Interstellar distances are HUGE. # space # science # travel

Absolutely incredible performance of "The Curious Incident". Anyone who can see this in # Sudbury absolutely should. Its run ends in a week. The cast even weathered an unexpected power bump at the theatre in the closing lines of the play with humour and grace. And I love seeing a good maths problem solved in real time. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/1938b19c58021255c5a523088f0176494ccf344474aa9381a804ff6e456dcde7/view

Yikes. You never realize how much, as a scientist, you travel for work until you are forced to confront your travel record. As part of our immigration process in # Canada , we have to provide 10 years of travel outside Canada and the US. My memory was thin. But I kept detailed records. In reviewing those records, I cannot believe how much I traveled for CERN-related activ…
