Tried some yeast + sourdough bacteria in today's #home_made_bread. The package said to "just" use in place of regular yeast, and it would become sourdough. I did not expect much, and today's batch "met expectations".
I'm also thinking of starting to use an oven instead of the #breadmaker, because I feel like the bread machine is getting too hot. I'd rather it got a little less hot and cook a little longer. #bread

300E for six months of water sounds like a really good price. I'm not sure what the exchange rate is, but my family probably pays $300 for two or three months of water.

Thinking about the link @geniusmusing posted about prisoner firefighters now being eligible for post-release employment ... #CA also has or had a program called the California Conservation Corps, which trained young twenty-somethings for wildland firefighting. I don't know what the hiring process is like, but I imagine mom and dad will wuickly tell them to go work at McDonald's…

Another one of my brothers found a picture of my parents, aunt, and two cousins, four months before my birth. None of my brothers or sisters are in the photo.

@mangeurdenuage @mangeurdenuage They did eventually fork "GIMP" into "Glimpse", so the time for arguing is over. I'm waiting to see whether they take on "Git" over the same issue.

@sim was discussing government debt and taxation, saying that the government is always in debt. Government always being in debt is a bad thing. What they should do is bring in enough taxes so they run budget surpluses during economic growth cycles, then run deficits during down cycles as the accumulated surplus is used to support displaced workers until growth resumes. A bus…

@6gain O.K., I think I fixed that.

A friend just texted to tell me her mom died today. No details. I told her to call if she needs to talk.

Took a trip to SGV in #SoCal to meet one of my brothers. Smoke was thick, but area isn't orange colored. https://abc7.com/weather/socal-air-remains-thick-with-smoke-from-raging-wildfires/6420436/ [abc7 com]
Locally, there is a thin layer of smoke against the mountains, but winds continue to push most of the smoke into the #Los_Angeles area.

#SGV is the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County.

@mangeurdenuage I always add with the remote subscription button that's on !loadaverage, but now I tried it on the other instance, and it didn't work indeed.
Weirdly, I can tell that shitposter.club did poke me with webfinger, yet "http://ostatus.org/schema/1.0/subscribe" was somehow beyond its reach.
Could be a bug in Pleroma, but just from looking at https://git.pleroma.social/pleroma/pleroma/-/blob/develop/lib/pleroma/web/web_finger/web_finger.ex I cannot really tell.

Glanced at PowerOutage.us ... looks like Cameron Parish, #LA, is still about 85% without power. Overall, it looks like 45% of the state is out. Most is due to #hurricane #Laura that went through the state a couple of weeks back.
There's an important caveat in that PowerOutage does not track all of the state's electric providers, so its figures could be high OR low.
