All this talk of Sega #Genesis games almost makes me want to dig out the Genesis imitator that I bought a few years back. I bought it and the one game I missed from those days (Aladdin) and played every evening until I changed hotels and couldn't connect it to the TV, then I shipped it home and haven't done much with it since then.

Optometrist sent me a coupon for prescription sunglasses. AFAIK, your office is only open to urgent needs, so regardless of the discount offered, how would I obtain them?

This coming week will bring the announcements of the Nobel Prizes. As for the @NobelPrize in Physics, I welcome speculations from my physics friends and colleagues!

@mangeurdenuage It was more than one person that left the #OAuth 2.0 project, claiming the design was too complex to be reliably secure. Implementing it was notoriously difficult to get right. But now, we rely on premade libraries that we assume to be "secure enough".

So it looks like the science boat (that took #sonTwo and #Daddy_A on their 8th grade field trip) is no more. Imagine being on a three-day boat trip with ~200 middle school kids.
No, actually, it was a surprisingly good time. Except on the bus ride back home when I asked one kid why he was called $NICKNAME and he started crying. But he soon got back in control and was fine.

@clacke @matt Speaking of Russian and Chinese, in Russian the expression is "китайская грамота", i.e. "Chinese writing".
-
@lain Yes, it's a variation on the world-famous "фунфырик".

I have toyed for months w/ COVID data to distract a bit from the horror. Today, I played with Twitter data to frame how ill the President might be. Since 9/1 he's tweeted (27 +/-2 ) [46 +/- 4] times on a Friday [Saturday]. Yesterday? 3 times. Today? 3. https://t.co/etmdhI0J9X https://twitter.com/drsekula/status/1312519794017484801/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/68100

On #Waterworld, I saw it on VHS video at a friend’s place late at night.
It might have been okay at 75-90 minutes, but at 135, it felt like 3 hours of useless filler. It wasn’t the worst movie ( “A River Runs Through It” is a candidate for that spot), but it was miserable ????.

Q: Is #Minix worth trying?
A: You're running it (in Intel chips) anyway, so why not try it?

I deviated from the recipe * for today's batch of bread. Then, when I saw that it seemed too dry to mix well, I added liquid. May have added too much.
* Ran out of "bread flour" so I used whole wheat and doubled the yeast.

Reminds me of cinnamon rolls without the sugar.

Found where I'd put my little compute stick. I need to replace the OS with a newer one. It has little storage, so I got "disk full" when I tried to upgrade Ubuntu.
Then I can use it for general browsing when I'm at a hotel. It hooks to the TV's HDMI port and I got a tiny wireless keyboard for it.

@mangeurdenuage My e-mail signature used to say "Linux opens doors. No more broken Windows!".

Sounds like the grumpy old man next door is having work dine in his back yard. There's a guy driving construction equipment around the yard. That's upwind, so I'm hoping they around spraying herbicides.
-
... so I'm hoping they AREN'T spraying ...

The hills a mile to the West are partially occluded by brownish smoke, but there isn't even any odor here. #SoCal

Transferred an unexpected loofah plant to its own pot today (hypothesis: animal dropped a stray loofah seed in some soil), and hilled a small potato plant. Then fish fertilizer for all! Next: the humans eat. :-)

#lazyNephew: (Opens refrigerator door.) Are those your grapes?
Me: Yes. You can have some. Just don't eat all of them.
lazyNephew: (Closing door and walking away.) I can't make that promise.
Kids are funny, even when they're almost thirty years old.

Suitcase was dusty and covered with cat hair. My skin feels as though millions of tiny predatory insects took out their steak knives and started to slice and carve their meal.

It has been a long time since I felt this. My skin was dry and extra itchy and starting to crack, but then I started adding some canola oil to my coffee. Now, my skin is much better, ignoring tonight's sensation. I'm going to shower and hope soap and water defeats the irritation.

Much better. Also took a Benedryl, so I may sleep earlier than usual.
