Regarding browser notifications, you need "Realtime" enabled for them to work. Typically this is done via the Meteor GS plugin ( https://git.gnu.io/gnu/gnu-social/tree/nightly/plugins/Meteor ), but there are a couple of other options out there too.
I'll add that information in the README (I thought it was already in there… oops!)
