     I assume they're x86 (since I know at least @catninja has an iMac that's pretty darn old - but it runs Debian well!). Have your girlfriend make a bootable USB stick to bring to school with preloaded GNU/Linux software. #InstantSupercomputer!

     ...which reminds me that the installation sucked because #Apple hates booting anything else than explicitly OS X installations from a USB stick. So maybe you will need a CD.
