I mean, yes, there were indications that AQ was planning an attack, even a large one, but if you think our intelligence agencies are competent enough to piece together those things, you have never worked with government agencies and their employees.

Remember, Russia warned the US about the Boston Marathon bombers before it happened. Security and intelligence agencies still weren't able to get to them and prevent the injuries and deaths of innocent people.

Have you ever spent thirty minutes or more trying to device the right search query to cause all the off-topic garbage and sites that are outside the desired resultset but the search engine includes them in the results anyway? I have. This is why, IMO, security based on gathering all of everyone's data is always going to fail. There's way too much noise, so either one overreacts…
