benfell (benfell)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Sep-2015 15:07:19 EDT benfell This is the risk of #decentralization but not !selfhost (ing). You're just as reliant on someone else, but with less stability.
I think Charles Roth deserves some credit here: When he felt he could no longer host his sites, he gave lots of notice up front. But even so, some folks were relying on him for some stuff. -

benfell (benfell)'s status on Saturday, 25-Jul-2015 00:45:04 EDT benfell Okay !security folks. What are the recommendations on email?
I see this lovely little gem here: http://postfix.1071664.n5.nabble.com/Disabling-Anonymous-Diffie-Hellman-td67965.html
Basically the argument seems to be that if you try to be secure, you'll just force a downgrade and be entirely unsecure. This is not the kind of argument that makes me happy.
What do people think? -

benfell (benfell)'s status on Wednesday, 25-Mar-2015 03:55:46 EDT benfell *Why* on ${DEITY}'s green earth would nsd use SSL3? And how can I get it to stop bitching that 'certificate verify failed', presumably because it is stupid enough to use SSL3? Even commenting out the directives in nsd.conf doesn't stop it from complaining. !security -
benfell (benfell)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Mar-2015 16:16:17 EDT benfell I don't think this is how it's supposed to be.
I have three servers. Not *one* of them has IPv6 from my service provider. All of them now have IPv6 via IPv4 tunnels courtesy of he.net . !selfhost -
benfell (benfell)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Mar-2015 16:12:23 EDT benfell Another bit of evidence for !selfhost : Open Salon is shutting down with undue haste. From the note I received, I don't see even how one would recover one's content there except by crudely copying and pasting each blog entry. -

My own feeling has long been that I want to host as many of my own services as possible. It's like driving cross country rather than flying: I am in control and I value that. -

benfell (benfell)'s status on Sunday, 09-Nov-2014 12:59:52 EST benfell @rozzin can't see why one would upgrade to 2.0. 2.1 supports ECC, although that seems to have been backported into 2.0 on #FreeBSD and some Linux distributions. -

benfell (benfell)'s status on Monday, 09-Jun-2014 02:42:27 EDT benfell @bobjonkman I used #Thunderbird for a while but it just got too slow, even when I told it to stop caching mail locally. I think, but don't recall specifically, there was other misbehavior as well. Now I use a combination of mutt (logging in to my server), Courier SqWebMail (which supports gnupg), and Roundcube (which doesn't--the plugin for it that's supposed to work doesn't). I'v…
