I read this yesterday, and I've been thinking about it. Nothing new for those of us who've been following #TOR for some time. But I'm a little surprised at the glibness the article attributes to Roger Dingledine http://pando.com/2014/07/16/tor-spooks/ !crypto !surveillance -

!FreeSoftware isn't about design aesthetics, or featuritis: " Free software is sometimes low quality. It is sometimes unreliable. It is sometimes inflexible. […] For free software advocates, glitches and missing features are never a source of shame. Any piece of free software that respects users' freedom has a strong inherent advantage over a proprietary competitor that does not.… -

Fortunately, @RonAmadeo comes to a conclusion that meshes with my own views: "But if you're willing to deal with a few headaches and slog through the sparse app selection, you'll have a better handle on your privacy and be able to brag that you have a (mostly) open source phone." -

Sadly, @RonAmadeo confuses the "Free" in !FreeSoftware with lack of monetization: "Why is the FOSS app selection on Android so poor compared to desktop platforms? Our educated guess is money. Apple and Google have made software monetization so easy that it's tempting to take the copyright route and make some cash." -
