You can follow #tags too, although that has some limitations (for instance they don't show up in your home timeline but on separate pages). That's why the main pattern in !gnusocial (at least so far) is to follow groups or people instead. -

I like the new !lastfm !youtube player, using since 2 weeks or so. I get more different tracks than before and e.g. when I play #tags it seems the limit-playing there was also gone -

In your connector settings for statusnet, uncheck the “Send linked #-tags and @-names to StatusNet” option and it won’t send the extra links -
