Hey, does someone experience something like this while trying to join group? http://url.pztrn.name/xt !selfhost !sn !ufos

@bobjonkman I think @jpope is a better person to ask about !selfhost ing a #Seeks instance. CC: @rozzin
-
@bobjonkman My understanding is that #Seeks uses #federation to help filter results (which mostly come from Google/Bing).

I definitely want to check out @YUNoHost some time https://yunohost.org/ !selfhost

@bobjonkman #seeks works fine: http://seeks.homecomputing.fr/

I've been thinking about !selfhosting a #Seeks server - is it a federated search engine? http://ur1.ca/gknt7 sez "Seeks is a websearch proxy and collaborative distributed tool for websearch" and "a websearch meta search engine that aggregates results and ranks them based on consensus". Hm, I thought it did its own crawling. But the latest contribution at http://ur1.ca/gknt6 is two …

@marc0s Hi, I installed prosody just fine, and setup Candy-chat for a family web chat room. thanks !selfhost
-
@zoowar I'm mostly waiting to !selfhost it.
-
@tuttle full ack. My proposal is nothing but a quick & dirty workaround, not a proper solution. (But will work for the time being)

I'm really not that desperate for mega drastic geek solutions. I would though really like to see more non techies on the !fediverse because I believe decentralized services and more !selfhost are the way to go, so this sort of thing needs to get fixed! @speeddefrost once said that federation seemed like an after thought/addon to !sn Somethings do definitely appear to be broken.

I've set up ejabberd at work about 5 years ago and it gets used a lot. How was prosody to install @marc0s? I know I should follow @bobjonkman advice and !selfhost after all, it's going to be a service for family members.

Thought of !selfhosting your own !XMPP server? Easier than running your own !StatusNet :D
-
@bobjonkman Interesting. No need to register or install a software to use is a plus. It’s rather undocumented sadly. Not that I’d need it, but I like the !selfhost idea.

You could !selfhost an eJabberd or Prosody server. Once they're set up they just run themselves. eJabberd has a slightly better admin UI (Web), Prosody uses a text UI. Only problem I've had with Prosody is that the self-signed cert keeps expiring once a year. I keep meaning to fix that.

I suppose I prefer to see people !selfhost , and when it's important content like this, even more.
