It is also thanks to Evan that !ostatus hade a platform in #identica to strive on, which turned into StatusNet which is today !GNUsocial and was the network which #Mastodon could bootstrap off and to this day federates with.

@cwebber While of course the @ mention syntax isn't part of !OStatus per say, it was to show that lookup of identities is only preferred to be done using WebFinger because it allows a pretty human-friendly (email-like) syntax.
...though now that I think about it maybe Salmon doesn't have a (specified) alternate method of distributing the private keys... But PuSH/WebSub would work just fine.

@cwebber No, !OStatus doesn't require webfinger IDs, you can adress with @example.com/subfolder/user if there's proper markup there.

Interesting #indieweb <-> !OStatus ideas: https://indieweb.org/2017/ostatusbridge

I've seen it but never looked further than "That should be doable".
I haven't read the RFC but I'm guessing something like an !OStatus instance reusing the Salmon-magic RSA keys for HTTP request signatures to authenticate?

@Gargron The data in !OStatus travels with HTML representation. If you create the HTML representation in a way that puts <img/> tags where the image links are (you know, like blog posts) then it's shown correctly. ...except that microblogging sites like !GNUsocial tend to ignore <img/> tags because we haven't bothered matching them against the attachments and presenti…

I'm perfectly happy that #Mastodon exists, and if it implements #ActivityPub in a future version, more power to it. And if it drops #OStatus support, well, that's what forks (or reimplementations) like #Mastodon are for. But don't blame #GNUsocial developers for not following #Mastodon's road map for the future.
-
The big thing that's prevented me from even trying #Mastodon is the lack of support for !Fedgroups. And that's not a wrongful implemenation of #OStatus; I believe #Fedgroups are implemented as a specific client behaviour, nothing to do with OStatus.
-
The author's explanation of expectation of "security" or "privacy" in #Mastodon is concerning. Knowing that !OStatus provides no privacy or security at all, bolting privacy and security features onto #Mastodon isn't going to work. This is not the fault of #OStatus, nor is it a shortcoming of #GNUsocial that it doesn't implement security or privacy with #OStatus, but recognizes that constraint.

@paulfree14 Why not send it to !gnusocial group ;) . If it's for gnusocial (or fork !postactiv for example ) and not ostatus, then send it to !ostatus group .

> on s'en contrefout de !gnusocial
should #mastodon dev make this two implementation of #ostatus unable to exchange data?
-

-
@einebiene WebSub (previously called PubSubHubbub - or PuSH) is the mechanism for subscriptions between !OStatus instances.

So #ActivityPup is going to be the new #ostatus and behond?
...don't know to much about neither one of the protocols, still.

Oh boy, Evan Prodromou (of #StatusNet / #Pump / #OStatus fame) showed up on #Diaspora's GitHub Issue tracker and asked that we support #ActivityPubIt's a nice thought, and hopefully we can do that in the long term. But some part of me is apprehensive about the spec and the leg work it will take to support it. There are certain unanswered questions, such a…

@b9ace !OStatus instances don't generally filter or algorithmise the feeds, so repeating/boosting/faving is not necessary to increase a post's worth. If people want to see more posts they'll subscribe to you and get them. There's no need to work around any built-in capitalism, so your posts will likely be seen by more than you'd think would see them on shitter.

@waha06x36 @Gargron <a href="http://status.hackerposse.com/url/15040" rel="tag">verbose microformats category tag</a> »Tags are embedded in HTTP URIs in a well-defined manner so that the tag embedded in an HTTP URI can be mechanically extracted from that URI. Specifically, the last segment of the path portion of the URI (after the final "/" character) contains the ta…
