@deadsuperhero Well, the info's gonna be there whether you like it or not. The data's there and profiles in a standards compatible !fediverse preferrably have a #FOAF transcription which means graphing of who knows who is available openly.
I do encourage keeping follower count low-key though (like calling them 'subscribers' as in !GNUsocial).

@kevinmarks @leolaporte Btw, to "get the whole firehose" you wouldn't need to subscribe to every single user across the !fediverse, you would just have to subscribe to each instance's public feed (that instance's local user).
And since these timelines are ordinary Atom feeds, any feed reader can combine this.

@webmink I’m not sure if actual staff from @FSF or the Conservancy are in the !Fediverse, but many people have joined the !FS !FreeSoftware, !OpenHardware, !FreeCulture and similar groups. @mattl Thanks for your reply, it really means a lot for some of us here. With Mastodon becoming a mainstream sensation overnight we've been starting to feel anxious about the future of !gnusocial and the !fediverse as a whole. Many reports didn't even bother mentioning GNU, StatusNet, OStatus etc. which got us worried that people won't get a full picture of how things work.

I suddenly remembered the !fscons event where @rysiek was holding a pep-talk for the !fediverse (or #TheFederation as he called it) and I came in through the door during the end of it with a United Federation of Planets outfit (from a halloween party the day before).

I'm inherently happy to see some faces in the !fediverse here that I otherwise could only have a read-only relation with. @rysiek is one, of course, but also of course @maloki who I remember tried out what would eventually become !GNUsocial a couple of years ago!
