Of course, to get the different behaviors, one needs to type Ctrl-C (or whatever key that gives a SIGINT) before the 5 seconds. -

@ghostdancer Meaning, if she'll have to use Windows OR OS X in the future, or she has in the past, why not use Gnome or KDE now? Easiest. -
