!GNUsocial has a similar feature for administrators called "Silence" #ShadwoBan #ShadowBan
-
Sorry, that's "Sandbox", not "Silence". And hardly sinister, it's a useful way of dealing with trolls who would just create a new ID if they were banned outright. #Silence in !GNUsocial is a more visible means of shutting down trolls, but less effective. #Sandbox #ShadowBan

And that article lost all credibility with me at the phrase "shrieking gamer".

Even better, you can set up your own !GNUsocial instance. So my GNUsocial timeline isn't polluted with trolls.

@moonman I first ran into the #Sandbox function while I was giving a demo of !GNUsocial at the KW #LinuxConf. Surprise! We had a conversation about it here shortly afterwards: https://n2.federati.net/conversation/71149#notice-71292

@bobjonkman2 Myeah, but for the optimal use case we'll have community/friendbased instances where shadowbanning is essentially only done on external accounts. So not as evil as it would be in a centralised system .)

For sure, as long as there are trolls and spammers a "Community" !GNUsocial instance works better than a "Public" instance.
