     @cathal The normal method of discovery is just to request nearby SSIDs, giving away the/a MAC address. No SSIDs.
     I guess the reason Google and Apple do this could be if it's for reason faster or maybe they want to know about networks which don't broadcast their SSID too. (if they store your acquired GPS position tigether with successfully authenticated base stations for example).
