Why does it matter what instance someone is on? I still have to subscribe to them to get their notices. I'm confused. -

OK. But people on your server can still sub to them on another instance and benefit from your resources. That's federation. -

Nearly the same resources. You receive their notices, store them in the database then serve them to subscribers. What is different? -

So we should exclude all new users, not just Nazis? I'm confused. -

I think what people are missing when they try to censor is that the #fediverse is one big machine. You can't easily exclude people. -

But hey, some of us think #freedom is a feature, not a bug. We created this network because we want freedom from control. Joshua Judson Rosen likes this. -

And I'm saying that is wrong. Resources are consumed by the subscribers, not the subscribee. StatusNet/GNUSocial is push, not pull. -

I don't believe enforcing different social norms is possible. Unless you tell users who they can subscribe to. -

As a child in the US I learned that freedom of speech meant freedom for everybody, even people I don't like. Who decides what is offensive? -

Sure. You can do anything you want if you're an admin. I wouldn't call it easy. It feels counter to the basic principles of federation. -

If someone wants to hear offensive content, it will be heard. Which means it is not offensive to some. Again, we do our own moderation here -

Right. So an instance can initiate a push. But that instance still bears the burden of serving its subscribers. -

That itself is an absolute statement. :) But yes, freedom ends when someone else gets hurt. -

In the current discussion, no one is forcing anyone to subscribe to offensive users, so no one can get hurt except by their own choice. -

Personally I don't consider insults to be harmful, especially if I invited the person. I may decide not to invite them in the future -

There are some who would not consider this offensive. -

I disagree. Being offensive is not enough to ban someone, people can just unsubscribe. BUt you can do what you want on your server
