i am trying to start a new !gnome group since the lebegue server is down. but the !gnusocial instance on quitter.no wont allow me to use the direct word "gnome". any way to get that fixed?

@bastianilso sadly that's a limitation of !gnusocial. A server can't have a user and a group with the same name. So you need to create the group on a server where no user "gnome" exists.

@bastianilso Think of usernames as the local part of an email adress.

@bastianilso But now that you mention it, I'm not entirely sure what the RFC7033 spec for WebFinger says. But I would guess it's along the lines of email, XMPP etc. that the string is normalized (lowercased at least) on comparison.

@bes It was actually not like that in #StatusNet. I'm eager to hear if usernames and groups should have different namespaces. I don't think so, but I'd like to hear an argument otherwise .)

@bes Well the original idea was that I wanted something like a "Page" in the aaocial media. Where there is an "Agent" (FOAF term) that can post as itself while others can also post _to_ it like a group. I.e. a group that can generate notices in its own name. @bes Note that !OStatus itself doesn't actually care since the IDs are URIs anyway. Just our implementation in !GNIsocial to avoid future trouble in upgrading .)
