I am thinking of writing a PHP web app. From scratch. Should be fun. I've worked on them a lot but never built my own.
-
I COULD do it in Rails but I've never gotten a Rails app to work with more than one table. And Rails requires a special server.
-
I run apache. I had to install some extension to get it to work, and there was no package for it in the repos.

It's not a huge headache, but enough to make me think twice. The dedicated Rails servers seem nice if you need performance.

I've been playing Morrowind (Elder Scrolls 3). I'm making a database that tells me what potions I can make from the ingredients I have. :)

I've written a lot of CGI stuff in Perl. I'm really not a developer but I maintain a lot of PHP and PHP/CodeIgniter stuff at work.

I enjoyed learning Ruby and Rails a lot. I got to a point where the tutorials where broken and didn't have time to debug them so I gave up

It will just have 3 tables in the database and some basic CRUD functionality. Perfect starter project.

I've played the first 2, then Skyrim and now back to Morrowind. There are mods to make it more playable, but you still need Windows.

Tutorials assume you're on the latest version - but server oriented Linux distros are always a version or 2 behind. Sometimes frustrating.

The first 2 games are now freely available and will play well on Dosbox or Wine. Daggerfall is still very playable and immersive.
