Shouldn't POIs described as "way"s also have a "node" somewhere within the area's bounds so it's easy to plop a marker in there? #osm

I have no idea what I'm talking about. /me reads some more

Not necessary. Nominatim will return proper lat/lon for an area, AFAICT.

Ways are constructed with multiple nodes. If the way closes, it implies it being an area. Not sure what you meant with "plop a marker there" (you can easily get the boundary box of the way/area with most #OSM related tools).
Maybe this belongs in !mappers too

@mmn wanted a maker near the centre of an area. Ways (and their nodes) are in the perimeter of an area by def. Figured out a way :)
