@tuttle @vegos here's the upcoming #group chat for !twister https://github.com/miguelfreitas/twister-html/pull/308
-
Well, I didn't log in to be sure, and then when I though (1), I saw they changed the OS completely on my hosting. (1) fuck this shit, I am using !twister anways
-
I am just forewarning you all, that probably I won't extend the contract of this hoster at some point. And will also not run sn anymore. cc @mk @mbjunior @copyme
-
That being said: make backups regularly! ;-)
-
It's not only that. twister supports my goals better. I don't see that sn/gs goes the right way. twister does!
-
No need to discuss more. I have done that long enough. I am just reviewing activities and see my activities in sn/gs were fruitless. You and others have of course other goals.
-
May be, from your point of view. In sn/gs too much time wasted, at twister I know that people share my ideals AND go the way. I am more willing and it's more rewarding to help there. in my mind: sn/gs is past and it's not attracting me anymore.
-
@lohang @erkanyilmaz @mk @mbjunior @copyme and twister has solved this problem from the very start. Self hosting for real
-
I know that gs is actively developped, but in comparison to !twister it's miles away that users can self-host gs (1). In the end what we do here is only enlarging the beehives, nothing more. twister doesn't do that. (1) http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Twister_experience#why_I_like_twister
-
@lohang means very likely the data portability http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/Statusnet_problems#data_portability
-
There are ideas like: to distribute "light trees" which are very pruned merkle trees for verifying specific transactions with some security for a too big blockchain. And: I also don't expect the masses from sn/gs (or elsewhere) to go there now. They won't. I prefer those who go, and am willing to care for them than having wasted time to "masses".
-
hehe, someone can feed my twister feed to the fediverse: http://twistnik.com/@erkan_yilmaz
-
future is future. now is now. sn/gs didn't achieve to "fix this" for so a long time. twister does it: I like that. point
-
@mk and even if twister wouldn't manage it in THE FUTURE, I am certain another app will come to the rescue then. owning your stuff may be a prio for some, for others not
-
It'd be intersting to do some measurements (1), you know where you can find me. In the end you don't need to run it all time, you just have to know which peer/DNS seeder to contact when you start it again ;-) to be fast uptodate. (1) cpu load of twister, which other progz run at same time, traffic, ...
-
@lohang @erkanyilmaz That's nice, won't have to work too much to give it a try then.
-
if you need a helping hand with something, shout :-)
-
I don't get the context. twister has no ads
-
"this is not a problem.": for me and my ideals it's a problem. As I said above: I see since the identicalypse a huge trend to beehives, not that many new instances. In twister every user is running his own instance, easily. That's what I want. For me ultimately it doesn't make much of a difference if people are here or on twitter chatting. They do it on someone else's territory, no their own.
-
you are welcome, it was a nice ride!
-
that was a joke. I won't invest any of my money for troubling any user with ads, and won't like people doing that either. cc Johnny
-
see my reply there, that should make it 100%: http://oracle.skilledtests.com/conversation/730148#notice-1170167
-
see (1), which other thread? then I can also reply there. (1) http://oracle.skilledtests.com/conversation/730148#notice-1170167
-
Ah, promoted msgs do not show up in the user's timeline at all. Users have to click to go to the "promoted post"-tab. Those promoted msgs are for those that generate blocks for twister, a reward so to say. Blocks increase the security of the network as a whole to ensure that usernames are kept safe (not forged/replaced).
-
well, my bad. I assumed the ";-)" was obvious :-(
-
no you should read it as: the blockchain is a central point, so there must be a fix for the problem. If/when there is such a problem in the future. Here in GS people/devs can just ignore the #data_portability (due to prio, ... or whatever) and thus binding the users still to their original instance. if the blockchain would ever be too large: it'd deter new users (since y…
-
!twister also uses bitcoin technology, and from there we know there are at least 1 mio users (1). I wonder if sn/gs could withstand such an amount? (1) https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/bitcoin-users-approach-5-million-mark-2019-juniper-research-reports/
-
from (1) we can see the user amount of identi.ca had, but not all were active. Also, the operating costs of $6K-$25k per month for identi.ca :-( (1) http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Identi.ca_figures
-
It is not the software stopping users from joining. That's the job of the authorities. It's the software enabling users to join despite of all restrictions. Now you can even circumvent a local firewall.
-
I wonder how much resources it'll take (since one has to have the webserver + mysql/mariadb + docker at least). My !twister runs now for over 1 day and uses "only" 101 MB RAM, I have currently >20 connections to other peers.
-
I see in the FAQ (1): "Currently there is a maximum of 1 promoted message to be shown every 8 hours for every client, but the exact policy to be used is meant to be decided by the community." (1) http://twister.net.co/?page_id=25
-
I will, in case you miss @question one day, read him here http://twistnik.com/@b0t
-
This instance will still exist for a little while, so no pressure. Actually a msg from private conversation leaked (thx SN/GS). #Help would be needed for the #data_portability http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/Statusnet_problems#data_portability
-
only usernames are stored in twister's blockchain: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/twister-users/cLbO1qHvUBA
-
Great. Which phone you have? Here (1) are some installers. Also, if you run into problems or so, come to the irc (2). (1) http://wiki.twister.net.co/w/using:twister_beginner_guide:twister_clients (2) http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23twister&uio=d4
-
Msgs from 1 node are propagated to other nodes, so it doesn't matter if the original sender goes offline
-
@mk ... and it's better than in sn/gs: only the sn/gs instances who follow the sender get the messages. Also: on sn/gs you can not retrieve the past msgs of the sender (e.g. friendica can do that)
-
yes, there's more than the "blockchain", there are 3 layers, see "How does it work?" from the !twister FAQ (1). See also "Does it scale?" there. (1) http://twister.net.co/?page_id=25
-
See (1) + replies. Interestingly, I don't see them, only when I go to the tab where they are. I think it has to do if someone starts the client new or so, perhaps? cc @lnxw48 (1) http://oracle.skilledtests.com/conversation/736022#notice-1170202
-
... and, someone with money can spam all of us here in a much faster time (than e.g. on twister). ads/spam are not a problem on twister. feel free to ask @lnxw48 (1) @lohang @vegos - (1) https://fresh.federati.net/notice/277285
-
That's not better, I am stating a problem in sn/gs. because when people want to participate in an ongoing thread (and that thread is not completely existing on their instance, but they saw parts of it here and there) they complain
-
With !twister you can access all past messages (e.g. !friendica does it also better than sn/gs: when you sub to a person it gets all past messages to your server)
-
yes, for Ubuntu here are 2 repos: http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Status_of_Twister_in_various_package_managers
-
I see that app is over 1 year old, who knows what/if it still works with the newest twisterd. I guess a screenshot could help me to see what the problem is ? perhaps post here, so others can also see laters: https://github.com/szelok/twister-android/issues
-
I have a weak device, thus: for me creating a promoted message would cost too much, it's not worth it. Not only when I think about the environment. I don't also need to mine to use twister, that is. I have posted on the twister mailing list (1), let's see the discussion. I guess it'd be interesting to get to know what people with good machines think about this. (1) https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/twister-users/80pTHXUtonQ
-
The only reason for me to look at the "promoted posts" tab is also: to look for new users and welcome them. So, in that view it's a detection mechanism, since new users try out the "mining" in the sense: what does this do?
-
yeah, based e.g. on followers quite many !twister users are #Chinese http://yazgi.net/twister/users/followers/desc
-
Hi @erkanyilmaz! I'll be sorry to see you go. Will the list of instances and Fedgroups continue to be hosted by you? If not, I have a mediawiki and would be willing to host that content.
-
it will as long as the wiki exists. you certainly should make yours also, we can link it on top of the existing one
-
@lnxw48 @tuttle @vegos twister's direct/private messages are #encrypted, see "How secure is twister?" in the !twister FAQ (1). "The structure is almost identical to the encrypted design used by #Lavabit (the provider of e-mail used by Edward #Snowden)." (2). (1) http://twister.net.co/?page_id=25 (2) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twister_%28software%29
-
memories fade with time... I want to support something that can change something. As for private message: it can, see my replies today. And in general: why I like twister http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Twister_experience#why_I_like_twister
-
@tuttle #encrypted #group chat in !twister is working now. Drop by so we can play some use cases :-) send me an invite to a group by you, or let me send you an invite

here are some experiences so far: http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Twister_experience#group_chat
