It's possible that your browser doesn't recognize the xmpp: URI scheme, and is trying to open that URI itself. A 404 error sounds more like a Web browser error than an XMPP error. XMPP MUC errors are listed at http://www.xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0045.html#enter-errorcodes -

My self-signed certificate for http://status.hackerposse.com/url/6558 expired some time ago, and the Prosody cert generator replaced it with one for cn=prosody.com which is completely invalid. On top of that it has also expired, so it's a doubly invalid certificate. I will fix it eventually, but I want to get a cert that lets me issue certs for my own … -
