I've got a small pile of drives, both Seagate and Western Digital, that are recognized on startup, but as soon as I try to read or write the drives disappear completely from the OS. It's a problem with the drive electronics; I'm convinced the data is still intact on the platters. The cost to repair exceeds the value of the data, and they don't even make good paperweights.
