I apply the hostname more for the service provided than the physical hardware. "kornbluth" the mail server has been on two different boxes with different OS versions; the Web server "irving" hardware was replaced one piece at a time (network card, power supply, hard drive, finally the case), now it's in its third case. So is that three different computers, or one computer with three different sets of hardware?
