Hmm..., I think @jd said he actually had a #toaster like this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OfxlSG6q5Y #amazing!

Indeed, I have several of those exact Sunbeam Automatic Toasters. I prefer the oldest T-20 models before they started engineering cost out. They are wonderful.
-
Wait..., when you say "I have several toasters"...?
-
@rozzin Indeed. I collect them, clean them up, bring them back to life, pass them on. So a number of family members and my neighbor also have one. You can get them for $20 to $200 on eBay. Why not? They are the best toasters ever made. Sunbeam appears to have made a lot of them. And they last.

@jd aaah—I was thinking you just *really* liked #toast, if you had a toaster for every room ☺
-
Hmm..., @jd it looks like your #toaster might have some competition... sort-of... maybe? http://status.hackerposse.com/url/18983
This whole "toasting without desiccating" idea is fascinating. Especially after I blew through a whole loaf of bread last week trying to get enough toasted-but-still-soft-enough-to-bite-through slices for 3 sandwiches....
Is this another case of "easy 50 years ago but impossible now"?

!TIL that there are toasters that #toast without desiccating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6lGaYh71g4
#toaster

@rozzin Hmmm... a toaster oven with steam? Is that a timer or a doneness sensor he is setting?
-
@jd yeah it does look like the Balmuda is timer-based, not doneness-based (he says "3 and a half minutes" as he sets the dial)..., so that's like..., how many steps forward vs. how many steps back? Also he's using special bread with it?
-
Yeah, I think he just likes that kind of bread. I know someone who has a steam oven installed in the wall (she doesn't like toaster or microwave ovens). She loves it. Uses it for reheating leftovers, etc.

This #Balmuda #toaster review in #Wired has more info—no mention of "done-ness" sensing, but it is doing something more clever than just heat-until-timeout: https://www.wired.com/2016/10/review-balmuda-toaster/
"Toward the end of the cycle, the steam stops and there's a burst of power to the heating elements, giving the bread a last-moment nudge toward toasty perfection."
