I've only got experience going to places I know I can stay with some sort of heatibg or where the sleeping bag etc. are already at the destination. @hannes2peer probably has good pointers though!

But my primary tip is of course GPX tracking and mapping POIs along the way, so batteries for your equipment should be packed ;)
