@daw I think it's acceptable to travel by train. Lots of people take the transsiberian railway to discover Russia and China for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Siberian_Railway
The absolute majority of in-country travels in the two largest countries in the world (China, India) are by railway, so I guess we westerners can use such transportation methods as well .)

@daw Boats exist too. Airplanes are just for those who think they're in a rush :)

@daw Certain boat types are of course troublesome for much sea life, but I'm still guessing the per-capita energy consumption is lower. Subsonic subwater noise is the another issue.

@daw If you travel, make your travel count and make the most of it as an life-altering experience; meet locals, take in the culture and enjoy your stay instead of downing cheap beer. One can also do some nice travel inside the country border and most people seem to forget the beauty of nature next door.
