Not really sure why people are surprised about the tent city around the Fife Amazon warehouse. There have been complaints about Amazon's working conditions as long as there's been an Amazon. Treating their workers poorly is ingrained in Amazon's corporate culture.

Perhaps it is, as many things like this, a realization that someone you gave the benefit of the doubt really is that bad. In which case one must wonder, why did you doubt in the first place? Amazon never positioned itself as some sort of worker's rights champion, to say the least, and indeed has loudly petitioned governments to erode worker's rights.

@purplehippo You'd be amazed how many people just don't care about mistreatment of people until that person's them. Personally, while I don't involve myself in a lot of fights over that, I do think that one should hardly be surprised.

@purplehippo A lot of them just can't compete, because they try to compete LAWFULLY. Amazon on the other hand, doesn't care about breaking the law, and regulators haven't gone after them, so they come off much cheaper.

@purplehippo The latter bit is the big thing. Amazon's lobby efforts represent almost 20% of their actual earnings. They have lobbied HARD in their home jurisdictions to erode labour laws in their favour.

@bob @purplehippo They didn't have anything to hide because the person who served their interests and targetted others was in power. Now that the shoe's on the other foot, they have plenty to hide.
