@gameragodzilla @verius Well of course he's going to pay homage to the dictator his father wanted to be.

I'd say I've lost all respect for Jill Stein but that would require me to have had any.

@verius I can't believe people are celebrating a guy who literally locked up gays just for being gay. Just goes to show how many progressives don't actually care about the minorities they pretend to speak for.
-
@verius @gameragodzilla He backpedalled in the early 1990s because the treatment of gay Cubans caused him a huge PR crisis at home and abroad but before then it was pretty much a daily occurance in Cuba to see gays rounded up and arrested, beaten on the streets, and all kinds of wonderful things like that.
-
@gameragodzilla @verius It got out that the gays arrested were pretty much being put through a version of conversion therapy and the press went nuts.
-
@gameragodzilla @verius I have a bit of a personal investment in this because one of my best friends escaped from Cuba to Canada with only 1/2 of the women who raised him. So it isn't just some scandalous story from the paper easily dismissed to me, its an event that caused a lot of turmoil and suffering for a close friend.
-
@gameragodzilla @verius I tend to doubt its happening as much as it was happening then - but I do agree that to some degree or another it probably still is happening.

@gameragodzilla @verius It was easy for Castro to "mellow out" in the later stages of his political career because by then all of his main detractors had either been killed, arrested, or fled the country.
-
@gameragodzilla @verius A somewhat heartwrenching aspect of this is to see a lot of gay cuban exiles in Cali and other similar areas have to tow the progressive US line of how awesome he was. They either do that or they get ostracised from their support networks and community.
Seems to me like they traded one brand of tyranny for another.
-
@gameragodzilla @verius Well, there are legitimately Americans who believe North Korea's propoganda, you know.
It's one of the reasons why a lot of foreigners think your country is kind of dim.
-
@gameragodzilla @verius You know it was Pierre Trudeau's closeness with Cuba that lost him power.
