@degeneracy For them to break that ignorance they'd have to admit that a great deal of things they have done "for the greater good" have been in contravention of their own stated beliefs, which they are very likely unwilling to do.

@degeneracy The longer they stand fast to such a hateful position, the more difficult it becomes for someone to abandon it, because in doing so they admit they were being so hateful. So more often than not, this is why you see people "doubling down" on such positions.
