Probably the biggest thing I've learned in life - and something I still struggle with - is not investing myself greatly in people in the hopes that they do the same.  They rarely do.  Best not to stick your neck out unless they've proven reliable.  And reliable isn't always the same as simply trustworthy.  I really wish that weren't the way she were, but it is.
