The ACLU aided the federal government in eroding the rights of American citizens and giving people whom were in the country illegally more rights than green card workers who legally entered the country. It's no surprise that they're against Trump's plans to deport the illegal immigrants.
That's why they try to avoid that term, you know. It's in the first word. "Illegal"

@eris More like "Everyone But Americans Civil Liberties" these days
-
@verius Which, apparently is an unreasonable and illegal position for which the ACLU hates him. I should think lawyers of all people should know the rule of law only protects citizens and those afforded guest status. This is the same most everywheres you go that isnt the EU (the EU is a bit of a complicated case with its free travel laws)
-
@verius Same reason why you can't sue someone for injuries you incur breaking into their residence or place of business.
-
@verius You have no rights while commiting a felony.
-
@verius I probably could have put that all in one post but oh well >.>

@nerthos One of Canada's saner laws pretty much states that you lose any special protections of law when you are in the act of commiting an indictable offense. There's still a very minimal standard applied to even criminals though, because some things just shouldn't be done to anyone period.
-
@verius In Canada you are allowed to use "all reasonable means to restrain, stop, or escape" your assailaint as a private citizen. The police actually have many more legal restrictions about what they are and are not allowed to do, because someone with a knife, handgun, or improvised weapon, is going to do a whole lot less damage than a policeman armed with a high-powered automatic rifle.

@purplehippo @verius Use of force law in the United States generally states that it is acceptable to use force to defend your place of business. California and New York are the two states that are the exception to this.

@verius That's a very tricky proposition sometimes though, because for instance, could I as a woman whose weight is currently in the two digits in pounds be expected to get in a fistfight with a 200+ pound guy? Our law recognizes and considers this, but not all countries that have this kind of law do.
