Another day... another decrease in the COVID-case doubling time in Collin County, TX. We've reached a doubling rate of 18 days, down from 52 days just 10 days ago. In exponential growth, the doubling time being shorter is worse for a disease. -

This is what health policy leadership has come down to in Texas: lead by riddle. What a mess. Just lead with human health and safety, in accordance with the best scientific evidence. Bring everything else (the economy, education, etc.) along with that. Stop leading by puzzle. https://twitter.com/drsekula/status/1273582982088003585/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/65650 -

Oof. Collin County's 7-day average of new daily cases now 150% of the rate at the peak in April. Our case doubling time just half what it was 5 days ago; at this rate, it now takes <1 month to double our cases. Tests are down. Cases are up. https://twitter.com/drsekula/status/1273389199014735874/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/65642 -

A delightful false equivalency from the TX Governor ends the article: he equates "requiring people to wear masks" (to prevent them giving the disease to others) with "putting people in jail." Nothing like logical fallacies in the middle of a pandemic. https://twitter.com/wfaa/status/1273218140655230976 -

Apart from the need to reproduce this result, the key takeaway is the last line of the article: To end this pandemic, we still need better diagnostics to detect, medicines to treat and vaccines to prevent covid-19. https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/06/16/inexpensive-steroid-dexamethasone-is-first-drug-reduce-deaths-covid-19/ -

It's tempting to think that my county, Collin, is a fluke... but our neighbor county, Denton, which is similar in demographics, size, etc. has been twinsies with us the whole time. We're like each other's control sample. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/public-health/2020/06/16/dallas-county-reports-306-new-coronavirus-cases-and-8-deaths-as-hospitalizations-er-visits-rise/ -

From factcheckdotorg https://twitter.com/factcheckdotorg on Twitter: Kudlow inaccurately said that hospitalizations may be going up, but thats because elective procedures are now permitted. COVID-19 hospitalization figures, which are increasing in some locales, are limited to those with COVID-19 diagnoses. https://t.co/W0aTmxhon7 -

Sick. And certainly not in-line with what my own county has seen. Testing is declining to levels at or below mid-April, while new cases are 3-4 times higher than at that same time. "Tow the line" vs. "Respect the science". SICK. https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1273029348619141127 -

We had so many new COVID-19 cases in Collin County today, I toyed with switching to a logarithmic y-axis for my tracking plot. I will note testing is DOWN, while cases are UP. Now I know why they call it "spiking". An analytic model for this needs a Dirac Delta Function. My institution posted its broad fall reopening plans today. There are 2 conflicting statements in it. One: classes will only have every other seat open. Two: people must maintain 6ft distance inside. 6ft in a 50% capacity classroom is impossible. I crave realistic guidance. -

Suppose a student doesnt wear a mask in the classroom. What do you do as an instructor? he said. Call campus police? Kick them out? These and many other questions plague faculty all this long summer. I look forward to answers to such questions. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/college-coronavirus-fall-campus-open/2020/06/10/f1537346-ab19-11ea-94d2-d7bc43b26bf9_story.html
