I thought my #Prosody config was OK… I've had successful MUCs on chat.sobac.com before. Maybe more of a #DNS issue than an !XMPP server issue. But I'm not going to worry about it now; instead I'll work on setting up some proper SSL certificates. !Selfhosted, of course. -

That would be correct. http://chat.sobac.com is not a valid http address; you need to connect with the !XMPP protocol, eg. xmpp:gnusocial@chat.sobac.com -

But with SSL an !XMPP message is decrypted to plaintext at the server. The NSA gets full access. You need OTR to fill the NSA's servers with incompressible cyphertext. !crypto -

SSL only protects you from your device to the XMPP server. Then the !XMPP message is decrypted to plaintext, possibly logged, sent to your correspondent's server, possibly logged again, then to your correspondent.
