Software RAID are recommended. They don't - for any purpose a !selfhost server can have - have impaired performance and (depending on your hardware) might even be better.

The best reason to use software RAID is that you're gonna have all the tools for recovery on _any_ Linux machine out there. (Compared to maybe even having to purchase a new RAID card upon failure just to recover content since it's not compatible with another brand or whatever).
