I didn't read the article, but based on the podcasts to which I listen, the key to a lot of these injury situations are these three variables:
1. Periodization. For example, do you run every day or do you give yourself time to heal. I use the technical term because "when" and "how much" are very tied together, but in the end are very different.
2. volume. This plays along with point one, but a 5k and a 50k are very different.
3. Your equipment. In this case, I mean your shoes, but also the terrain (roads, trails, etc.), and your physical build (not just size, but foot type, etc.). If you roll your ankles a lot for whatever reason (which is definitely tied to trails and shoe type), then you are likely going to put a lot more strain on your knees.
