@loki @moonman There's actually a few friends I cannot communicate with on XMPP because they use insecure XMPP servers. While I could lax server restrictions for them or create an exception, I feel it is better for all involved for me to advocate them finding a secure server instead, or help them set up their own. I helped my almost 90-year old grandmother set up Prosody for her and some family to use to communicate as a better alternative to Facebook, and given the ease of setup, I recommend it to pretty much everyone. Jitsi and Gajim are both user-friendly enough to be used by not very technically adept people. My grandmother uses Jitsi, for what it's worth. So from end to end, it is remarkably trivial to set up compared to most free software.
Actually being 100% secure with it can be a bit trickier, since that involves changing usage habits, but it's usually "good enough" for everyday use, even for normies.
