The medications themselves, like any other drug, have specific affects, and most psychiatric medications when used for their intended purpose are safe and at low risk for severe side effects. However, overprescription is a real problem, and using a bazooka on an ant is going to have a lot of collateral, yes. If you use a drug outside of it's intended use, or a more severe drug than you need to use, then you are doing your patient a disservice, because in the very best of situations you're going to be managing much more in the way of side-effects than you really should have to.
