@sim @verius The problem with actual gender equality is that it goes both ways.  If people like me want women to be equal to men (which, well, I do at least!) that means not only improving the areas which were deficient, such as historically, the right to vote, and more modernly, conventions around marriage and job roles, it ALSO means we need to be prepared to temper or surrender special statuses or the areas which we do better.  That's the contentious part.  People never want to surrender what they already have.
