@verius That said there is a lot of snake oil being pushed in green energy.  It's this generations "comet pills" - and if you don't know what I'm referring to, its because it was a similar scare culture pushed by the science of the time by modern media that ended up embarrassing the mass media greatly.

Carl Sagan speaks of the dangers of this and uses this as a direct example in Cosmos if you're interested in learning some more. 

Skepticism is the panacea to so much of this, but actual skepticism is more difficult than people let on.  You have to be willing to become the outgroup for a lot more people than most would think.
