@nerthos The media control public opinion.  They only control that opinion because the people let them, but they do nonetheless.  Indeed, a lot of the reason sentiment remains so split is because it is beneficial both to the media and Clintons now, to drive that wedge issue home.

And, in doing so, they're communicating that they cannot be reasoned with and will not listen to you, so frankly at this point if Trump does turn guns on them, I won't even be surprised nor would I even really condemn it.  I have no sympathy for acts that someone brings upon themselves.
