In all likelihood this is more related to a combination of the costs of them developing the DRM they place on CPUs as well as them having definitely done quite the scad of diversity hires.

The hires themselves aren't what cost money, it's the lost efficiency - wasted time on bad code which means redevelopment.  One bad hire can easily cost people several man-hours of redevelopment time.
