@mangeurdenuage I remember seeing results from a survey of US news media in the 1980s. On average, they had a very different set of beliefs than the rest of the populace. They also believed they should alter their reports in order to persuade the rest of us to adopt their views.

Later, the right-wing got their own media, which did the same thing from the other direction.

The effect is that we have large numbers of extremists, but a sensible centrist has trouble winning an election.
