I used to be strongly in favor of dual-licensing (the pre-Oracle MySQL model). Now I’m not sure where I stand, just because so many companies are trying to ensure that their freedom-respecting / open source product is not business-viable, so that anyone that uses $PRODUCT to make money has to pay. (Or misinterprets a copyleft license in ways that push companies to pay for exceptions or face legal action.)
I’m also not so sure that licenses created for the express purpose of pushing those who aren’t “contributing” code to pay money 💰 💵 should ever be consider Free, Libre, or Open Source. The whole idea seems rather predatory to me.
Before you make any kind of “he doesn’t understand business” judgement about me, I’ve been studying and advocating small business for many years. I don’t feel that this kind of license helps smaller businesses. It is more meant for a company large enough to have a legal team available to threaten organizations into compliance.
