I think the thing that really gets me here is the slimy feeling. Back in the day, I paid for the occasional *shareware* program. To be sure, for a low to average income person, getting your computing devices to do all the things you wish for them to do can easily cost more than your annual income, so I did not and could not pay for everything I used.

If company A wants to everyone to pay to use their software, use a proprietary license and pay to license a third party company’s license enforcement scheme. If company B wants users and other developers to be able to assist in making the program better, understand that they are potentially giving up a fistful of dollars, pounds, euros, yen, pesos, rubles, and so on in exchange for that assistance.
