I do not know whether the # still does this, but decades ago, I used to put in my personal info and attach my W-2 forms and mail the form back in late January or early February. The IRS would calculate my taxes (including earned income tax credit) and send me a check.

I'm sure this is only helpful if you're pretty low on the income scale. It isn't like they have an obligation to find every possible deduction or credit. But it was a stress-free way to take care of an unpleasant task.
