Fifteen or twenty years ago, I was able to see Wi-Fi networks from five miles away (hilltop to hilltop), but as the number of networks proliferated, I soon could not detect networks farther than 2-3 houses away.
In some areas, that kind of spacing would work fine, but in others, one would need to fill in the space with other meshnet APs.
