About you question, why use GNU social? why not?
GNU social rocks, it is a great implementation of !ostatus it's really easy to start developing a plugin and it has a great crew of developers working on it
#Sharings is already functional, it transforms GNU social into a federated Sharing Economy platform. Federation occurs once per publishing, once per updating and once per deleting http://git.lasindias.club/manuel/Sharings
Today we finished localization structure of the plugin, so, it is possible to translate it to other languages, It is already translated to Komunuma, our dialect of Esperanto and to English
If you have any question, just send it to us ;)
