It is/can be helpful: e.g. for #MIP reports (mentioned in passing), when I am bug #hunting I report bugs I see (to add later more details) before I spam the bugtracker with incomplete bug reports. Another advantage is: who of the SN users looks really regularly into the bug tracker ? When they see in their timeline bug reports (however detailed) they might remember that when they experience it and hopefully add a reply (somewhere)
